Charles' Story
Assistant Chief Charles Howard, 60, grew up in the city with a paid fire department and didn’t realize there was a volunteer service until he moved to Northern Jersey. Like Northern Jersey, the fire departments in Upper Macungie Township are volunteer as well.
“From a young age, it has been my desire to go into the fire service,” said Charles. He has volunteered for 23 years and spent six years at Good Will Fire Company #1 of Trexlertown.
“The skills I’ve learned helped me to grow as a firefighter, manager on my day job, minister and being a better man,” said Charles.
“I always say not everyone can be a firefighter; it’s a calling. The question is, ‘Are you ready to answer?’”
