John's Story

Shortly after John Ellermann, 39, graduated from high school, he became interested in volunteer firefighting. “I wanted to help the people and neighbors in my community become a part of something that’s bigger than me that saves life and property,” said John.

Today, John is a volunteer firefighter, the President of the Upper Macungie Township Station 56 and also served as the station’s first engineer for two years. He has been volunteering in the fire service for 18 years now.

“When I first became a volunteer firefighter I used to believe that the Fire Department needed me, but now I have a changed view that I need the Fire Department as much as it needs me,” said John.

John is more involved in his community thanks to volunteering and loves the people he works with. “I personally have the benefit of working side by side with, in my opinion, some of the finest volunteer firefighters in the area.”

John believes everyone has a skillset they can bring to the fire service. “We all have talents and possible untapped potential. Why not use that potential or talent to help those in your community?”
